Privacy Policy

Plain language first: we collect what the campus needs to work, we don't sell it, and you can ask to see or delete it.

Draft — awaiting review before publication

Draft for legal review — not legal advice. This text describes how the school intends to work. It is not a final policy and is hidden from search engines until it has been reviewed.

Who we are

Ricketts University (“the school”) is an independent online arts education project operated by Ellis Ricketts in Ontario, Canada. For privacy purposes the likely applicable framework is Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). This must be confirmed by legal review before launch.

What we collect

  • Account details — your email address, display name and password (stored only as a secure hash by our authentication provider).
  • Profile — anything you choose to add: headline, bio, pronouns, location, website and disciplines.
  • Coursework — enrolments, lesson progress, assignment submissions, feedback and assessment results.
  • Studio and community content — portfolio pieces, Presence Builder entries, development goals, Commons posts, room messages and private messages.
  • Contact messages — your name, email, topic and message when you use the contact form.

We do not collect payment details at this stage; no payments can be taken.

Why we use it

  • To run your account and the campus features you use.
  • To give feedback on your work and keep a record of what you’ve completed.
  • To moderate the community and keep it safe.
  • To reply to messages you send us.

Where it's stored

The campus database, file storage and sign-in are provided by Supabase, which acts as a service provider (processor) on the school’s behalf. The hosting region will be stated here before launch. Data may be processed outside Canada; where it is, it remains protected by contract and by access rules in the database that limit each person to their own records.

Who can see what

  • Your coursework is visible to you and to staff who review it.
  • Portfolio pieces are private by default. You choose whether each is private, visible to students, or public.
  • Commons posts and room messages are visible to members of that space. Private messages are visible to participants.
  • We never sell personal information, and we never use your work in promotion without written permission.

Cookies and local storage

The site stores your light/dark appearance choice in your browser’s local storage, and, when you sign in, your authentication session so you stay signed in. The campus preview stores which sample persona you picked for the current tab only. No advertising or third-party tracking cookies are used. If analytics are added later, this section will be updated first.

Keeping and deleting data

We keep your information while your account is active. You can ask for a copy of your data, a correction, or deletion of your account and its content by email at rickettsuniversity@gmail.com. Some records may be kept for a limited time where the law requires it. Specific retention periods will be set during legal review.

Your rights and complaints

You can access and correct your personal information and withdraw consent, subject to legal limits. If you’re not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

Changes to this policy

When this policy changes, the date at the top of the page will change, and signed-in students will be notified of significant changes.
