02Our Mission

To help artists build work worth seeing, and lives that let them keep making it.

Teach the craft. Teach the business of the craft. Then get out of the way and let artists do their best work.

Principles

Six principles every course is written against

  1. Craft first, always

Professional presence is worthless without strong work behind it. Every department starts from making things well.

  2. Then make it visible

Being findable is a skill that can be taught: a clear headline, honest bios, a tight portfolio and consistent profiles.

  3. Feedback is the curriculum

Students learn fastest from specific, kind and useful critique against criteria they can read in advance.

  4. Beginners are welcome

Plain language, no gatekeeping and no assumed knowledge. Experienced artists can skip ahead; nobody is left behind.

  5. Honest about what this is

No inflated credentials. Students receive records of what they completed, and that is exactly what the records claim.

  6. A private, respectful community

The Commons belongs to students. It is moderated, it has no algorithm, and members' work is never used without consent.

Who we’re building this for

  • Self-taught artists who want structure and honest feedback.
  • Graduates whose portfolio and presence haven’t caught up with their skills.
  • Designers and illustrators moving towards client, commission or production work.
  • Working artists who want the business side organised at last.

Ricketts University is a young project. The mission will stay fixed; the courses will grow as they’re written.
